USDOE Transition to Teaching Programs

Are you thinking about changing your career and becoming a teacher?

If you are interested in teaching, and are flexible about where you might teach, you could be eligible for a $1000 stipend to offset the cost of certification, once you are hired by a participating school system.  To explore further, reflect on the questions below:

Do you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university?

Have you NEVER had a clear-renewable teaching certificate in any teaching field in any state?

Have you passed the GACE content test(s) required, or do you think you would be successful in passing those tests?

If you answered “Yes” to all of the questions above, have passed a criminal background check, and are interested in teaching math, science, special education, English as a Second Language or ELL, English Language Arts, Social Studies or Foreign Language, you may qualify.  The systems below participate in one or both grants, Georgia Teaching Force Program (GTFP) or Focus on Change in  Under-represented Staffing and Staffing Systems (FOCUS). For GTFP, eligible subjects are: math, science, special education, or ELL (ESOL) for more than 50% of the day. For FOCUS, eligible subjects are: math, science, special education, ELA, social studies, foreign language or ELL(ESOL) for more than 50% of the day.

The two grants are awarded by the United State Department Of Education (USDOE) Transition to Teaching Grant funds to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC), in collabration with Coastal Plains Regional Educational Services Agency (CPRESA) and Southwest Georgia (SWRESA) for the purpose of supporting college degreed teachers who enter the profession from a variety of non-traditional routes (did not complete a traditional College of Education teacher preparation program and student teaching).  Each teacher selected for enrollment will receive a $1,000 stipend and the services of a mentor after signing a promissory note and agreeing to teach in an eligible content area in a participating school for three years while completing full certification requirements. For information regarding eligible position openings in qualifying schools, in eligible content areas, contact the individual named for the school district in which you are interested.
